About Us

About Us - Paws on the Street

At Paws on the Street, we believe love has four legs and a leash.

We’re a fully volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Austin, Texas — no salaries, no paid staff, and zero overhead spent on personal gain. Every dollar raised goes straight to helping the most loyal companions of those experiencing homelessness: their pets.

Our journey started with Brandy, a gentle Doberman who was more than a dog — she was family. When Brandy became sick with cancer, we did everything possible to comfort her in her final days. That experience opened our eyes to something bigger happening on the streets of Austin: people with nothing, still giving everything they had to the animals that loved them unconditionally.

      We saw dogs wrapped in blankets on cold sidewalks, cats curled in shopping carts beside owners skipping meals to feed them first. These weren’t just pets — they were lifelines.
    

That’s why Paws on the Street exists. We provide food, flea/tick prevention, basic supplies, and veterinary support to the pets of our unhoused neighbors. We do it with dignity, compassion, and a deep belief that no one — human or animal — should be left behind.

With your help, we’re growing a grassroots movement built entirely on kindness. Whether it’s a donated leash, a warm coat, or a few hours volunteering, everything counts — and everything goes directly to the street.

We’re honored to receive a formal proclamation from Mayor Kirk Watson recognizing our work supporting the pets of our unhoused neighbors. Every bag of food, flea med, and vet visit matters — and now the city agrees.

About Us

Welcome to Paws on the Street, an accredited 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organization. We’re a group of compassionate volunteers inspired by one simple truth: pets are family. Like so many of you, we’ve experienced firsthand the bond that grows between humans and their pets—the love, loyalty, and comfort they provide, especially in the toughest times.

Our journey began with Brandy, our beloved Doberman, who taught us the depth of this connection. When Brandy fell ill, we did everything we could to care for her, sparing no effort to ease her pain and show her just how loved she was. As we walked through this experience, we started noticing others facing hardship in Austin—homeless individuals with their pets by their sides; devoted companions through every challenge.

For many experiencing homelessness, their pets are all they have, offering warmth, love, and a reason to keep going. Yet, they often face impossible choices, sharing what little they have with their loyal friends. That’s where Paws on the Street comes in. Founded in November 2024, we’re here to make a difference for those who have no one else—ensuring pets don’t go hungry and their owners don’t have to choose between their own survival and their pet’s well-being.

If we don’t take action, who will? Together, with people like you, we’re building a network of hope, care, and compassion.
